Best Start Grant

The Scottish Government recognise the impact of COVID-19 and how it is putting many families in Scotland under financial pressures. The Best Start Grant School Age Payment can help ease some of that burden – it’s a £250 payment towards the cost of starting school.

Social Security Scotland would be grateful if you could help spread the word about the payment to ensure that eligible families get the support that they are entitled to.

The Best Start Grant School Age Payment is a £250 payment made around the time a child normally starts Primary 1.

It is open to people who receive certain benefits or tax credits and are a parent or carer of a child born between 1 March 2015 and 29 February 2016.

People are encouraged to apply online at www.mygov.scot/beststart

Those that cannot access the online service, can speak to one of the Client Advisers by calling 0800 182 2222 between 9am and 3pm on Monday to Friday.

The payment is part of the Best Start Grant, a package of three payments that gives extra money to parents and carers during the early years of a child’s life.

Apply between 1st June 2020 and 28th February 2021.
